One of the oldest colleges west of the Alleghenies, founded in 1829. The College is also home to some Lincoln letters. Because of the strong views of many of the students and faculty, Illinois College was considered an engine of abolitionism. Illinois College is a four-year liberal-arts college, offering degrees in various fields of study, including Education and Biology.

Illinois School for the Deaf

The Illinois School for the Deaf places its education emphasis on Total Communication; on complete oral, aural and manual communication skill development. This residential school for the hearing impaired educates Illinois children from ages three to twenty-one.

Illinois School for the Visually Impaired

A residential facility which serves children from Illinois between the ages of five and twenty-one who are blind or partially sighted. ISVI offers a comprehensive academic program with emphasis on the development of independence and prevocational skill.

Lincoln Land Community College

The facilities in downtown Jacksonville offer a wide variety of college transfer courses, occupational training, and classes for those who want to learn a new skill or explore a new interest. In addition to transfer courses in the humanities, math and science, LLCC provides developmental and GED courses for students who wish to strengthen their skills for advanced study.

MacMurray College

MacMurray College dates its history from 1846 when a group of Methodist clergymen, led by Peter Cartwright and Peter Akers, founded it as the Illinois Conference Female Academy. The first class was held in 1848. In 1955, the Trustees established MacMurray College for Men as a coordinate institution related to the Women's College. Finally, in 1969, the coordinate colleges were reorganized into a single institution. MacMurray is a four-year college, specializing in Social Work, Nursing, and other degrees.
